How To Remove Underarm Hair (Armpit Hair) At Home
Underarm hair removal is a routine for most women. However, when the salon bills start to add up, one starts to wish there was a cheaper alternative. Well, there is. Hair removal at home is common practice for a lot of women. With the number of different hair removal techniques, there is something for everyone. Following, I’ve put together a list of the different underarm hair removal methods that you can try at home.
How To Remove Underarm Hair At Home
1. Remove Underarm Hair Using A Razor (Shaving)
- Sharp Razor
- Towel
- Shaving cream/Hot Shower
- Cucumber Juice/Coconut Oil
Prep Time
2 minutes
Method
- Get into a hot shower or thoroughly cleanse your armpits with warm water.
- Step out of the shower for a minute and exfoliate your armpit by gently rubbing it with a coarse towel.
- Step back into the shower with your razor. Alternatively, you could apply shaving cream onto your armpit for lubrication.
- Ensure that your razor is sharp and start shaving with your arms raised over your head. If you have sensitive skin, avoid shaving against the direction of hair growth. If you don’t have sensitive skin, you can shave across the grain for a closer shave. However, this might cause ingrown hair.
- Shower with cold water or rinse your armpits with cold water after you’ve finished shaving. This will help close your pores and prevent infection.
- Pat your armpits dry with a towel.
- Moisturize with cucumber juice or coconut oil.
How Often?
2-3 days depending on the rate of hair growth. Give yourself a week’s break every once in a while.
Pros
- Fast and efficient.
- Exfoliates your skin.
- Painless.
- Inexpensive.
Cons
- Hair grows back within a day or two.
- May cause ingrown hair.
- May darken underarms.
Tips
- Shave at night so that you can take your time while doing it. This also gives your underarms a chance to recover, and you won’t have to deodorize straight away.
- Keep your underarms hydrated so that the skin remains healthy. Use ingredients such as coconut oil or cucumber juice. Alternatively, you could use a deodorant with avocado oil.
- Rinse your blades after every shave and keep them clean.
- Replace your blades often. Always use a sharp razor for best results.
- If you don’t have sensitive skin, shave in all directions to give yourself a close and smooth shave.
- Use a mini razor for the hard to reach parts of your armpit.
2. Pluck Underarm Hair With Tweezers
You Will Need
- Tweezers
- Towel
- Aftershave
Prep Time
2 minutes
Method
- Get into a hot shower or thoroughly cleanse your armpits with warm water. This will help soften your skin so that the hair slips out more easily.
- Step out of the shower and exfoliate your armpit by gently rubbing it with a coarse towel.
- Lift your arm over your head and start plucking. Ensure to pluck from the base and tweeze in the direction of hair growth to avoid ingrown hair.
- Take regular breaks to keep your neck and arms from becoming stiff.
- Finish with an aftershave
How Often?
Every month or every other month depending on how long your hair takes to grow back.
Pros
- Hair takes longer to grow back.
- Gentler on the skin than waxing.
Cons
- Painful.
- Takes forever!
- May cause ingrown hair.
Tips
- Tweeze in the direction of hair growth to avoid ingrown hair.
- Ensure that your tweezers are sharp and sterilized. You can use an emery board to sharpen them and rub alcohol on them with a cotton pad to sterilize.
- Wait until your hair has grown out a bit to pluck again. Waiting until your hair has grown to about a quarter of an inch is ideal.
- Tweezing might not be for you if you have really thick hair and are prone to ingrown hair, or if you have sensitive skin.
3. Remove Armpit Hair With An Epilator
You Will Need
- Epilator
- Towel
- Lotion/Aloe Vera Gel
Prep Time
2 minutes
Method
- Ensure that your epilator is charged.
- Get into a hot shower or thoroughly cleanse your armpits with warm water. This will help soften your skin so that the hair slips out more easily.
- Step out of the shower and exfoliate your armpit by gently rubbing it with a coarse towel.
- Raise your arm over your head and keep your skin taut. You could get someone to help you with this step.
- Switch the epilator on and use it on the lowest setting. Holding it at a 45-degree angle, pull out a bit of hair until you get used to the pain.
- Once you are ready, hold it at a 90-degree angle and glide it across your armpit. Do not press down on your skin as it might get caught.
- Glide the epilator across your armpit in all directions until all of the hair is removed.
- Your armpits might be red and sore once you are done. Apply some soothing lotion or aloe vera gel to help them recover.
How Often?
Every 4-6 weeks depending on how long your hair takes to grow back.
Pros
- Fast and efficient.
- Hair takes longer to grow back.
- Gentler on the skin than waxing.
Cons
